  • There are two types of lamp oil: kerosene-based and paraffin-based. Kerosene-based lamp oil can be classified into purified and non-purified variants.
  • Purified kerosene can be used both indoors and outdoors, while non-purified kerosene is only suitable for outdoor use, such as in garden torches.
  • This is because the impurities in non-purified kerosene release toxic gases when burned. On the other hand, DHR does not recommend the use of paraffin-based lamp oil.
  • Paraffin, similar to kerosene, is derived from oil distillation, but it is not as liquid in its natural state. To transform it into an oil, solvents are added to increase its liquidity.

Sesame oil is a type of vegetable oil derived from sesame seeds, which are the seeds of the Sesamum indicum plant. It has been widely used in various cuisines around the world for centuries, particularly in Asian and Middle Eastern cooking.

Sesame oil is known for its distinct nutty flavor and aroma, which adds a rich and savory taste to dishes. It is available in two main types: light sesame oil and dark sesame oil. Light sesame oil is made from toasted sesame seeds and has a lighter color and milder flavor, while dark sesame oil is made from roasted sesame seeds, giving it a deeper color and stronger flavor.

In addition to its culinary uses, sesame oil is also valued for its potential health benefits. It is rich in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, including omega-6 fatty acids, which are considered to be heart-healthy fats. Sesame oil also contains antioxidants, such as sesamol and sesamin, which have been studied for their potential anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties.

Sesame oil is often used as a cooking oil, particularly in stir-frying, sautéing, and deep-frying, as it has a high smoke point. It is also used as a flavor enhancer in marinades, dressings, sauces, and dips. In some cuisines, sesame oil is used as a finishing oil to drizzle over dishes for added flavor and aroma.

When purchasing sesame oil, it is important to look for cold-pressed or unrefined varieties, as they retain more of the natural flavor and nutrients compared to refined sesame oil. It should be stored in a cool, dark place to preserve its quality and prevent it from turning rancid.

Overall, sesame oil is a versatile and flavorful cooking oil that adds a distinctive taste to a wide range of dishes, while also offering potential health benefits.

Frankincense is tapped from the scraggly but hardy trees by slashing the bark, which is called striping, and allowing the exuded resin to bleed out and harden. These hardened resins are called tears. There are several species and varieties of frankincense trees, each producing a slightly different type of resin. Differences in soil and climate create even more diversity of the resin, even within the same species. Boswellia sacra trees are considered unusual for their ability to grow in environments so unforgiving that they sometimes grow out of solid rock. The initial means of attachment to the rock is unknown, but is accomplished by a bulbous disk-like swelling of the trunk. This growth prevents it from being ripped from the rock during violent storms. This feature is slight or absent in trees grown in rocky soil or gravel. The essential oil of frankincense is produced by steam distillation of the tree resin. The oil’s chemical components are 75%monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, monoterpenoles, sesquiterpenols, and ketones. It has a good balsamic sweet fragrance, while the Indian frankincense oil has a very fresh smell. Steam or hydro distilled frankincense oil does contain a number of boswellic acids (triterpenoids), which represents a method of validating the authenticity of the essential oil. The chemistry of the essential oil is mainly monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes, with small amounts of diterpenoid components being the upper limit in terms of molecular weight. It is extracted from resin from the Boswellia carteri tree, of the Burseraceae family and is also known as Olibanum and gum thus.Frankincense has a woody, spicy, haunting smell, a little bit camphoric, but very pleasant. It is pale yellow-green in color. frankincense oil is extracted by steam distillation from the oleo gum resin and yields about 3 – 10 %. An absolute is also produced, but is mainly used as a fixative.Frankincense oil soothes and calms the mind, slowing down and deepening breathing and is excellent for use when meditating. It also helps to calm anxiety and obsessive states linked to the past.

Safflower oil is a type of vegetable oil extracted from the seeds of the safflower plant (Carthamus tinctorius). The safflower plant is a thistle-like annual crop that is native to the Middle East and has been cultivated for centuries for its oil-rich seeds.

Safflower oil is commonly used for cooking, as a salad dressing, and as a dietary supplement. It has a mild, neutral flavor that allows it to be used in a wide range of culinary applications without overpowering the taste of other ingredients. It has a high smoke point, which means it can be used for high-heat cooking methods such as frying and sautéing.

One notable characteristic of safflower oil is its composition of fatty acids. It is a rich source of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), particularly linoleic acid, which is an omega-6 fatty acid. Omega-6 fatty acids are essential fats that our bodies need but cannot produce on their own, so they must be obtained from dietary sources. Safflower oil is one of the highest sources of linoleic acid among edible oils.

Due to its high omega-6 fatty acid content, safflower oil is often marketed as a healthier alternative to other cooking oils. However, it’s worth noting that the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids in the diet is important for maintaining a healthy balance. Many Western diets tend to be higher in omega-6 fatty acids and lower in omega-3s, which can lead to an imbalance and potential health issues. It’s generally recommended to consume a balanced ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids.

In addition to culinary uses, safflower oil has also found applications in the cosmetic and skincare industries. It is often used as a moisturizing ingredient in skincare products due to its lightweight texture and ability to penetrate the skin easily.

Overall, safflower oil is a versatile vegetable oil with a mild flavor and high smoke point, making it suitable for various cooking methods. However, it’s important to consider the overall balance of fatty acids in your diet when incorporating safflower oil or any other cooking oil into your meals.

  1. Choose a carrier oil: Select a carrier oil that is suitable for diluting essential oils. Common carrier oils include jojoba oil, almond oil, coconut oil, or grapeseed oil. These oils are gentle on the skin and help distribute the essential oil evenly.

  2. Prepare a clean bottle: Use a dark glass bottle to protect the oil from light and extend its shelf life. Ensure the bottle is clean and dry before use.

  3. Determine the dilution ratio: The dilution ratio depends on the intended use and the sensitivity of the individual. For general use, a 2% dilution is commonly recommended, which means adding approximately 12 drops of vetiver oil per ounce (30 ml) of carrier oil. Adjust the dilution ratio according to personal preference and needs.

  4. Measure and mix: Using a dropper or a pipette, add the desired amount of vetiver oil to the glass bottle. Then, pour in the carrier oil while maintaining the chosen dilution ratio.

  5. Cap and shake: Securely cap the bottle and gently shake it to thoroughly mix the oils.

  6. Label the bottle: Label the bottle with the contents and the date of preparation to keep track of its freshness.

Geranium bourbon essential oil is derived from a plant that belongs to the Pelargonium, not the Geranium genus of Geraniaceae.
Back in 1737, the father of modern botanical nomenclature, Carolus Linnaeus, combined the entire genus of the Geraniaceae together in his epic work ‘Species Plantarum’. Although all the genera were later separated, the term ‘geranium’ had become so well established with Pelargoniums that it is still in common use today.
There are approximately 250 natural species of Pelargonium, with thousands of hybrids and cultivars, although surprisingly few of these species have a truly pleasing fragrance. Pelargoniums are believed to be of South African descent, but due to massive hybridisation after their introduction to Europe in the 17th century they now bear little resemblance to their original parentage.
During the 18th century, hundreds of these European hybrids were returned to South Africa, and were later introduced to Algeria, Australia, Comoros, India, Israel, Madagascar, Morocco, Reunion Island and North America. Much later in the 1940’s pelargoniums were introduced to the Yunnan province of China, which still remains one of the largest geranium oil producing countries.

Cade oil, also known as juniper tar or juniper wood tar, is a dark, viscous liquid with a strong, smoky aroma. It is derived from the destructive distillation of the wood and branches of the Juniperus oxycedrus tree, commonly known as the cade or prickly juniper tree. Cade oil has been used for centuries in various applications, including traditional medicine, skincare, and as a fragrance component.

In traditional medicine, cade oil is known for its antiseptic and antipruritic (anti-itch) properties. It has been used topically to treat skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and dermatitis. Cade oil is believed to have soothing and healing effects on the skin, reducing inflammation and itching. It is often found in ointments, creams, and soaps targeted towards these skin conditions.

Due to its distinct smoky scent, cade oil is also used in the fragrance industry. It adds a smoky, woody, and leathery note to perfumes, colognes, and other scented products. Cade oil is often used as a base or middle note to provide depth and complexity to fragrances.

Cade oil has insecticidal properties and has been used as an insect repellent. It can be used to deter insects and parasites, such as lice and mites, in animals and livestock. Additionally, cade oil has been used in veterinary medicine to treat certain skin conditions in animals.

It’s important to note that cade oil is a potent and concentrated substance and should be used with caution. It is typically used in small amounts and diluted with carrier oils or other ingredients before application. Some individuals may be sensitive to cade oil, so a patch test is recommended before using it on a larger area of the skin.

As with any essential oil or medicinal product, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional or aromatherapist before using cade oil, especially if you have any underlying health conditions or are pregnant or breastfeeding

Flaxseed oil, also known as linseed oil, is a nutrient-rich oil extracted from the seeds of the flax plant, scientifically known as Linum usitatissimum. Flaxseed oil has gained popularity due to its high content of omega-3 fatty acids, lignans, and other beneficial compounds. It is typically obtained through cold-pressing or solvent extraction of the flaxseeds.

Here is a description of flaxseed oil and its potential benefits:

  1. Rich in omega-3 fatty acids: Flaxseed oil is one of the richest plant-based sources of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an essential omega-3 fatty acid. Omega-3 fatty acids are known for their anti-inflammatory properties and play a crucial role in supporting cardiovascular health, brain function, and overall well-being. Consuming flaxseed oil can be a convenient way to supplement omega-3 fatty acids for individuals who follow a vegetarian or vegan diet.
  2. Heart health: The omega-3 fatty acids found in flaxseed oil have been associated with numerous cardiovascular benefits. They may help reduce inflammation, lower blood pressure, improve blood lipid profiles by increasing levels of beneficial HDL cholesterol, and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as heart disease and stroke.
  3. Antioxidant properties: Flaxseed oil contains lignans, which are antioxidant compounds that have been shown to have potential anti-cancer properties and may help protect against chronic diseases. These lignans can act as phytoestrogens and may have hormone-balancing effects in the body.
  4. Skin health: Flaxseed oil’s omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidant properties can benefit skin health. Regular consumption of flaxseed oil or application of flaxseed oil topically may help improve skin moisture, reduce inflammation, and alleviate certain skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.
  5. Digestive health: Flaxseed oil is a rich source of soluble and insoluble fiber, which can support digestive health. It may help promote regular bowel movements, relieve constipation, and support a healthy gut microbiome.
  6. Hormonal balance: The lignans found in flaxseed oil can have estrogenic effects in the body and may help regulate hormone levels, particularly in women. This can be beneficial for alleviating symptoms associated with hormonal imbalances, such as hot flashes and menstrual irregularities.

It’s important to note that flaxseed oil is sensitive to heat, light, and oxygen, which can cause it to become rancid and lose its nutritional properties. It is best stored in a cool, dark place and used within its expiration date. Additionally, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional or a registered dietitian before incorporating flaxseed oil into your diet, especially if you have any underlying health conditions or are taking medications, as it may interact with certain medications.

Grapeseed oil is extracted from the seeds of grapes, typically wine grapes. Since grape seeds are usually discarded as part of the wine making process, the extraction and sale of grapeseed oil is an efficient use of a byproduct. Because each seed yields a small amount of oil, grapeseed oil is usually extracted chemically. The chemical extraction does have an impact on the flavor of the oil, but it makes grapeseed oil affordable for people who want to purchase it. The oil is known for being light in color and flavor, with a hint of nuttiness. It is a polyunsaturated oil, and contains beneficial compounds such as linoleic acid. There are two primary uses for grapeseed oil: cosmetics and culinary applications. Some cosmetic grapeseed oils are stabilized with chemicals. Like other oils, grapeseed oil should be stored in a cool dark place until it is used, unless it has been heavily stabilized. In cosmetics, grapeseed oil is widely used. It is often combined with other oils to make massage oil, since it glides well on the skin and it also has moisturizing properties. Grapeseed oil appears to assist with skin repair, as it has mildly astringent and antiseptic qualities. Some companies use grapeseed oil as a short term natural preservative in body products, while others integrate it into moisturizing creams, sunscreen, and an assortment of other products.
